INTRODUCTION
Dreams are great. Dreams are necessary for life or no one would ever go anywhere. But a dream without a goal, and actions, has no opportunity to come true.
Denzel Washington had it that “No man is born to this world without a perfect dream from God. Most times it is okay to dream big but planning big help the dream to become big”
It is okay to fail once, twice but it is not okay to GIVE UP, you need to try it again and again until you get a positive result.
On 29 March 1975, Denzel Washington the American popular actor was flaunted out of college because of his low CGP but he did not give up, he fell through it and fought back and today he is one of the most successful actors in the world with thousands of academic awards.
Jack Ma applied to Harvard University 10 times and was rejected in that 10 consecutive times. He never gave up, he fell through it and tried it again and again until he got it and today, he is one of the best businessmen in the world. He was also rejected after applying for a job 30 times but today, he has more than 50 employees working under him.
This book is about a young boy named Derek, a young talented footballer who was disliked in his community, schools, and neighborhood and was told that nothing good will ever come out of his life. He felt bad, struggled his way to the top with a high level of hard work, and in the end, he was victorious.
CHAPTER 1
The Early life of Derek
Derek Collins was born in the soa Pedro parish of Funchal, the capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira, and grew up in the nearby parish of Santo Antonio.
He is the fourth and youngest child of Flora Collins, a cook, and Daniel Collins, a municipal gardener and part-time kit man.
His great grandmother on his father’s side, queen, was from the island of Sao Vicente, Cape Verde. He has one older brother, Victor, and two older sisters, Mary and Vivian.
Derek’s mother revealed that she wanted to abort Derek due to poverty, his father’s alcoholism, and having too many children already, but her doctor refused to perform the procedure. Derek grew up in an impoverished catholic home, sharing a room with all his siblings. He washed people’s cars to make a living. Things were very hard and terrible as they had no one to help them. Derek lost his father at a tender age and the pain was so severe yet he was working hard to keep the family going each day.
Derek had a very optimistic passion for football and he decided to take it upon himself but there was no one to help him, as a child Derek played for Andorinha from 1992 to 1995, where his father was the kit man, and later spent two years with Nacional. In 1997, aged 12, he went on a three-day trial with sporting cp, who signed him for a fee of $1,500. He subsequently moved from Madeira to Alcochete, near Lisbon, to join a sporting youth academy.
By aged 14, Derek believed he could play semi-professionally and agreed with his mother to cease his education to focus entirely on football.
While popular with other students at school, he had been expelled after throwing a chair at his teacher, who he said had disrespected him.
One year later, Derek was diagnosed with tachycardia, a condition that could have forced him to give up playing football. Derek underwent heart surgery where a laser was used to cauterize multiple cardiac pathways into one, altering his resting heart rate. He was discharged from the hospital hours after the procedure and resumed training a few days later.
Derek dedicated his whole time and life to football. His class teacher once told him that he would not make it in football but Derek kept working hard towards his future. Despite his poor background and the pains in his family, Derek was always positive about his life and future.
